What is ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb used for thousands of years in Ayurveda, the traditional medicine system of India. Its botanical name is Withania somnifera, and it is also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry. Ashwagandha contains several bioactive compounds, including a group of substances known as withanolides. Withanolides have been associated with antioxidant and cellular stress-resolving effects.
What are withanolides?
Withanolide glycosides are a family of plant steroid derivatives found in the leaves and roots of the ashwagandha plant. They are best known for their adaptogenic properties and have been studied extensively with respect to health and well-being. Although ashwagandha contains a number of bioactive compounds, withanolides are believed to be responsible for the plant’s beneficial effects and regarded as a marker of efficacy.
What does “standardized ashwagandha” mean?
Standardized ashwagandha refers to ashwagandha supplements where the concentration of active compounds, particularly withanolides, is consistent and confirmed through laboratory testing. Standardization ensures that each batch or unit of the supplement contains a specific percentage of these active compounds, providing predictable and reliable strength. Notably, the ashwagandha extract in these soft gels is standardized to 35% withanolide glycosides in order to offer activity at low doses.
Is ashwagandha safe for everyone?
Although ashwagandha is generally considered safe for consumption when used as intended, pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to avoid ashwagandha due to a lack of sufficient safety data. People with autoimmune diseases or those taking immunosuppressants should also consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement.
What are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)?
EPA and DHA are polyunsaturated omega-3 fats that help resolve cellular stress and serve as structural
components of cell membranes. Both omega-3 fatty acids are credited with having significant impacts on brain function and emotional well-being. EPA, in particular, has been studied for its potential effects on mood regulation. While the human body can convert alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) into EPA and DHA, the conversion rate is very poor, and obtaining adequate amounts of ALA from diet can be difficult. High-quality fish oil supplements provide a reliable source of EPA and DHA to help ensure sufficient intake of these critical omega-3 fats.
Suggested Use: Adults take two softgels daily, with food, or as directed by your health care professional.
